Decisively modern, Katsu Hamanaka’s lacquer work is integral to his notoriety. Initiated into this art by the great master Seizo Sugawara, who also inspired Eileen Gray and Jean Dunand, Hamanaka distinguished himself by wisely implementing the ancestral art of lacquer in his striking abstract compositions. As opposed to Jean Dunand, his work is very rare, disappearing completely in the 1930’s.
