Ancient Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman influences intermingle with those of the great twentieth century sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and of course the artist’s omnipresent brother, making our table a quintessential Diego Giacometti creation. However, Diego carved his own artistic path, and our table, with its minimalist lines, is an excellent example of his early work. The idea for this table came from his earliest creations – the display case for Raoul Dufy’s ceramics created in 1953 and the iconic “Cage à Oiseaux” birdcage with the “Chat Maitre d’Hotel” Cat in its center created in 1962 for Fondation Maeght – both works with the same elegant base as our table.
