It was during a dinner party at Claude and Francois Lalannes’ home in Ury near Paris that Madame X, the couples friend and an early collector, fell in love with the candelabras for the first time. They were created especially for Yves Saint-Laurent and were destined to be placed in the music salon of the iconic 55 rue Babylone apartment. Claude Lalanne spent years elaborating a series of 15 spectacular mirrors for the famous commission and the candelabras were meant to bring the final touch to the ensemble.  That pair, numbered 1/2 and 2/2 A, was evidently beginning of the edition. The artist will only execute three large model (92.5 cm high) pairs during that time, including Madame X’s numbered 1/2 C.
