In March 1930, Lartigue meets beautiful, 26 year old Renée Perle. This Doeuillet model of Rumanian origin soon becomes one of the star figures of the Art Déco period. Lartigue’s muse in painting and photography, she is also his lover between 1930 and 1932, time during which their love story takes them to most glamorous places of their day. Until her death in 1977, Renée Perle will carefully keep the extraordinary ensemble of photographs taken during that time.
Composition we are presenting today is doubtless one of the most beautiful Renée Perle renderings by Lartigue. Artistic blurs and expressive accents bring to mind Man Ray’s portrait of Nancy Cunard. A slightly tighter framed version of this unique print is conserved in the “Fondation J. H. L” collections (album 1930, vol. II, fol. 101 verso).
