This table is a quintessential Diego Giacometti creation. Ancient Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman influences intermingle with those of great twentieth century sculptors (such as Constantin Brancusi), along with the influence of the artist’s omnipresent brother Alberto. However, Diego traced his own artistic path, and our minimalist side table is an excellent example of his early work. This model was originally created in an edition of twelve for the famous bar of the Maeght Foundation in 1962, an iconic commission that put the artist on center stage.
In 1966, Mr. Gustav Zumsteg, art collector and owner of the “Kronenhall” restaurant in Zurich, hired his friend Diego Giacometti to redesign his adjacent bar. The sculptor delivered some of his best pieces for this legendary project, and a small series of side tables was among them. Mr. Zumsteg even gave one as a present to his friend Hubert de Givenchy. Diego Giacometti followed suite by giving one to his own friend, the Swiss collector and art dealer Mr. Erberhard W. Kornfeld, who Alberto met in Bern in 1948.
